Live pga tour golf1/1/2024 Now that golfers are on the course, follow PGA Championship live leaderboard coverage throughout the first 18 holes. Round 1 faced a nearly 2-hour delay due to frost, pushing back the start time for competition to get underway. This year's 105th affair of the PGA Championship did not start as smoothly as organizers would have hoped. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour have agreed to merge with Saudi Arabias Public. Phil Mickelson with Yasir Al-Rumayyan at the inaugural LIV Golf event in England in June 2022. CBS Sports is offering live coverage of the 2023 PGA Championship from start to finish Thursday along with live streaming of the tournament over the weekend. There is so much to follow this week that it can be overwhelming at times. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, with no majors between them, round out the top five of the odds board (per Caesars Sportsbook) with Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau the only other golfers facing odds of 20-1 or better. Other than the Rahm-Scheffler battle - and they are certainly heading in vastly different directions early at the PGA Championship - there is Rory McIlroy's internal battle to get back in the winner's circle at a major bumping up against his familiarity with Oak Hill. However, as anyone who watches major championship golf knows, expectations are rarely reality when there are this many quality golfers pining for a share of what is expected to be a $15 million total purse and $2.7 million winner's share. The grounds will be filled to capacity with expectations that Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler will duel over 72 holes as the rest of the start-studded field looks up at them. The action in upstate New York begins Thursday with Round 1 at Oak Hill Country Club setting the stage for the rest of the year's first major. The 2023 PGA Championship has arrived with four days of pristine golf at one of the nation's best courses ahead.

"We needed a good response," said Sissons. The Predators (15-13-0) lost 4-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday but have won 10 of their past 13 games after a slow start to the NHL season. "Going on the third period, I really felt we understood that maybe we didn't have the energy, we needed to play a certain way, but we managed the game extremely well." "Early in the year we probably would have caved a little bit, so I think we've been able to grow as a team here. "We're starting to understand how to win these kind of games when maybe you lose a little momentum," said Brunette. Captain Roman Josi pitched in with two assists. “It seems something has changed in this ecosystem,” Sarmarra says.MONTREAL - Nashville Predators head coach Andrew Brunette believes Sunday night's 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens was a good example of how far his team has come.Ĭolton Sissons scored twice, Juuse Saros made 36 saves and the Predators held off the Canadiens despite a late push from the home side at Bell Centre. But Samarra cautioned it’s difficult to know what’s really going on without a closer analysis. So far they’ve conducted their experiment on four killer whales, and while the pilot whale calls didn’t immediately scare them off, a few of the killer whales did swim away. Selbmann and Samarra spent this past summer broadcasting pilot whale recordings at killer whales equipped with tracking tags. “Are the killer whales avoiding the pilot whale sounds?” “Now we want to test the reverse,” says Selbmann. Previous research conducted in Norway showed that when scientists played the sound of killer whales to pilot whales, the pilot whales swam straight toward the sounds and swarmed the researchers’ boat. To gain insight into what could be driving the interactions, Selbmann and Samarra are performing acoustic playback experiments. Already, scientists have noticed other odd cases-such as how humpback whales seem to defend other whales against killer whale attacks. Researchers are beginning to pay more attention to the unusual interactions between different cetacean species, Ferguson says, noting which are capable of defending themselves against attack, and which become aggressive toward predators. However, there have been a few accounts of smaller prey species attacking the killer whales back. Steve Ferguson, a marine mammal ecologist at the University of Manitoba who is not involved with the research, says that the sightings are unusual because in so many other places killer whales are a top predator, and other smaller cetaceans tend to avoid them. Perhaps the pilot whales are viewing them as a threat, and responding accordingly. In other parts of the world, killer whales do feed on smaller whales such as minkes, belugas, and narwhals, and are even known to chase down larger baleen whales. “They’re not really a threat to pilot whales,” she says.īut Selbmann says it’s possible that the pilot whales didn’t know the killer whales weren’t a threat. For example, meerkats will throw sand at snakes.” But even this explanation isn’t ideal, Selbmann says, considering the killer whales aren’t known to eat the smaller pilot whales. “A lot of animals mob their predators to rob them of the element of surprise. “The other theory is that it’s anti-predator mobbing behavior,” explains Selbmann. Since the 2015 encounter, she’s seen similar interactions around 20 times.Īnna Selbmann (front left), Filipa Samarra (back left), and colleagues scan for whales off Iceland. Interactions between killer and pilot whales have only been scientifically documented a few times, and Samarra is among the first scientists to have observed this behavior in Iceland. “It’s very unusual that they’re afraid of anything-or seemingly afraid.” “It’s quite unusual because the killer whale is this top predator,” says Anna Selbmann, a doctoral candidate at the University of Iceland who is supervised by Samarra. As the whistling grew stronger a group of pilot whales came into view, and the killer whales seemed to turn and swim away. “Then the killer whales just went silent,” says Samarra, a biologist and lead investigator of the Icelandic Orca Project. She listened as they pipped, squealed, and clicked when suddenly her ears were filled with high-pitched whistling. In 2015, out on the choppy waters off southern Iceland, Samarra and her research team were eavesdropping on a group of killer whales. In a kite-fighting contest, Amir breaks his father's record of 14 "kills", and Hassan runs after the last defeated kite. On Hassan's birthday, Amir gifts Hassan a US-made one. Amir does kite fighting, and Hassan is his spool-holder and "kite runner", who can accurately predict where loose kites will land, and has deadly aim with a slingshot. His best friend, Hassan, is the son of Baba's long-time servant, Ali, a Hazara. In Kabul in 1978, 10-year-old Amir is the son of a wealthy Pashtun philanthropist and iconoclast, known locally as Agha Sahib, whom Amir calls "Baba". Arriving home, Amir receives a call from his father's old friend and business associate, Rahim Khan, now in Peshawar, Pakistan. In San Francisco in 2000, Afghan-American writer Amir Qadiri and his wife Soraya watch children flying kites. The film's score by Alberto Iglesias was nominated for Best Original Score at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007. Made on a budget of $20 million, the film earned $73.2 million worldwide. The controversial scenes also resulted in the film being banned from cinemas and distribution in Afghanistan itself. However, after concern for the safety of the young actors in the film due to fears of violent reprisals to the sexual nature of some scenes in which they appear, its release date was pushed back six weeks to December 14, 2007. Filming wrapped up on December 21, 2006, and the film was expected to be released on November 2, 2007. The child actors are native speakers, but several adult actors had to learn Dari. The majority of the film's dialogue is in Dari Persian, with the remainder spoken in English and a few short scenes in Pashto and Urdu. Though most of the film is set in Afghanistan, these parts were mostly shot in Kashgar in Xinjiang, China, due to the dangers of filming in Afghanistan at the time. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet military intervention, the mass exodus of Afghan refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime. It tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul who is tormented by the guilt of abandoning his friend Hassan. The message behind the very ending could be interpreted differently by different readers, but personally I feel that it offers a small sense of hope for both the future of its characters, and perhaps for war-torn Afghanistan as well. The Kite Runner is a 2007 American drama film directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by David Benioff and based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Khaled Hosseini. The final chapter of the book is perhaps my favourite, and one that I have found moving even when rereading it. Without giving away the ending, Amir ends up back in Afghanistan and makes a very different set of sacrifices in order to set things straight. Amir himself becomes a writer, and he reflects on his experiences in the story as though his life itself were a piece of fiction (which of course it is!).īut I think the best bit about the kite runner is its sense of fate and justice, of good overcoming evil in the end, despite all odds. Hosseini's writing finds a great balance between being clear and yet powerful, and not only is the story itself brilliantly constructed, but the book also explores the very art of storytelling. The story is fast-paced and hardly ever dull, and introduced me to a world – the world of Afghan life – which is strange, fascinating and yet oddly familiar all at the same time. Amir and his father are forced to flee Afghanistan for America, and The Kite Runner becomes the story of Amir's quest for redemption – righting the wrongs he committed all those years ago as a boy in Kabul. In war, people are often forced to make great sacrifices, and the young Amir himself commits an act of betrayal, towards his best friend Hassan no less, which will haunt him for the rest of his life. Tuning fork in medical use1/1/2024 However, among patients presenting with sudden unilateral hearing loss, lateralization of the Weber test to the contralateral ear very reliably predicts a sensorineural etiology, and such patients should be promptly referred and treated accordingly. In light of these data, clinicians should be alert to the possibility of sudden SNHL being overlooked in patients without the expected tuning fork findings. Thus, if a Weber test unexpectedly lateralizes to the asymptomatic, better hearing ear, this finding should prompt immediate audiometric testing, and urgent otologic referral if a sensorineural loss is confirmed. Most patients with alternative diagnoses routinely considered by primary care providers, such as cerumen impaction, Eustachian tube dysfunction, or otitis media, will present with a conductive hearing loss. The high reliability of the Weber test when it lateralized away from the suspect ear confirms that the test retains value in the clinical setting when assessing a patient presenting with acute hearing complaints. The finding that the Weber test did not lateralize or could not be heard in over 20% of study participants was consistent with other reports that conclude that Weber test results can be unreliable. 6 This study was undertaken to evaluate whether the Weber test might help identify patients with suspected SNHL who require prompt referral and treatment. Since most patients who experience a sudden SNHL are seen in a primary care setting, and since more common conditions are often difficult to distinguish based on clinical assessment alone, referral for specialty evaluation and audiometry are frequently delayed beyond the ideal therapeutic window. We hypothesized that the Weber test would be a useful clinical metric to diagnose unilateral SNHL. 4 Tuning fork testing and formal audiometry were performed as part of the baseline assessment of eligible study participants, creating a robust database that facilitates a prospective evaluation of the utility of the Weber test in this setting. Because hearing is a function of both mechanical components of the ossicles and neural components of the cochlea, hearing loss can be either conductive. 2, 3Ī recent multicenter, randomized controlled clinical trial compared oral and intratympanic corticosteroids for sudden SNHL. Tuning forks are an effective tool clinicians can employ to test a patient’s hearing, but this goes beyond the simple task of being able to hear a tone. However, the role of tuning fork testing in the initial workup of hearing complaints has not been clearly elucidated. As such, tuning forks have the potential to assist with initial treatment and appropriate triage because they are available, inexpensive, and easy to use. 1 Because patients frequently seek initial evaluation in urgent care or primary care settings, audiologic assessment may not be immediately available. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a condition for which prompt diagnosis and initiation of treatment is of paramount importance.
